First decide whether it's an income or expense category — this can't be changed once it's created, so choose thoughtfully. If it's a subcategory, pick which group it belongs to. Give it a clear name.

A couple of things happen automatically that are worth knowing: a subcategory always takes on its group's color, so you can't set a different one for it individually, while icons work the other way around — only subcategories get one, groups don't. You can also mark one subcategory as the default for its type, which is handy if you want a sensible pre-selection when adding transactions quickly.
