Two-Level Categories

Organise income and spending in a clean two-level tree: groups that roll up, subcategories that hold transactions. Colours stay consistent and budgets follow the structure.

Two levels, zero clutter

Categories are a tree exactly two levels deep. Category groups such as Food & Drink, Transport and Housing organise and roll up. Subcategories such as Groceries, Restaurants and Coffee are what you assign to transactions. Every category is either income or expense, and transfers need none.

Start from scratch, or add a predefined set of income and expense categories in one click if you have none yet.

In practice

A group and its children read as one family

Groups own the colour and subcategories own the icon, so each group reads as a visual family. Change a group's colour and every child follows.

Retire a category without losing history by archiving it. It stays linked to past transactions, disappears from pickers, and stops counting toward your plan's category cap. Archiving a group archives its subcategories too.

Budgets follow your structure

Pick a group and a budget includes its subcategories automatically. The import wizard's AI matches file descriptions against your own categories.

Show the parent when it helps

Turn on Show Parent Category to see Food & Drink > Groceries wherever similarly named subcategories could be confused.

Clear plan limits

Basic explores within a category cap that counts groups and subcategories but not archived ones. Pro removes the cap.

FAQ

Can I nest categories deeper than two levels?

No. The tree is exactly two levels deep, enforced by the server, which keeps budgets and reports predictable.

Can I delete a category that has transactions?

No. Archive it instead. Archived categories keep their history and stop counting toward your plan cap.

Why can I not choose a colour for a subcategory?

Subcategories inherit their group's colour so each group reads as one family. Change the group's colour and all its children update.

Can I set a default category?

Yes. You can mark one subcategory as the default for expenses and one for income.
